Rockwater Resort stands as a testament to human ingenuity and resilience. Following the devastating Category 5 Tropical Cyclone Pam, which ravaged the region with winds exceeding 300 km/h, the land was left barren. Yet, despite the absence of infrastructure such as power or heavy machinery, water, communication, or shelter, we embarked on an extraordinary journey over 2.5 years to build this unique Vanuatu eco resort by hand.
In these YouTube videos, “Building Rockwater Resort by Hand,” we chronicle the process, highlighting the challenges we faced and the innovative solutions we developed to create a sustainable haven for travellers seeking an authentic experience in paradise. The cyclone’s aftermath presented both obstacles and opportunities. While it destroyed the natural forest, leaving only a few hardwoods and pieces of banyan, it also allowed us to make use of the fallen timber for our construction and décor.
Nine portable sawmills were brought to the island to salvage the timber before termites could claim it, creating a race against time. The timber we secured contributed not only to the resort’s structure and aesthetic but also served as a reminder of the old-growth forest that once thrived on the island. Our efforts have transformed the landscape and revitalised the local economy, creating jobs, supporting local businesses, and helping ensure the community thrives alongside our substantial investment.
This commitment to sustainable tourism on Tanna Island lies at the heart of our mission. By choosing to book directly with hotels such as Rockwater Resort, travellers play a vital role in investing in the local economy. We employ 99% local people, pay taxes that support community services, and remain a steadfast presence during challenging times.
The resort also provides shelter for others when other resorts must evacuate in a Category 5 cyclone. Our dedication to protecting the environment and supporting the community is woven into the very fabric of Rockwater Resort, making it an ideal destination for those who want to explore the beauty of Tanna Island while supporting sustainable tourism.
A prime active example is the Rockwater Marine Park, the first on Tanna Island. The Rockwater Marine Sanctuary has become a highlight of our guests’ stay.
